Tension Trauma Release (TRE)

TRE is a groundbreaking somatic technique designed to help the body release deep muscular patterns of stress, tension, and trauma. Unlike traditional talk therapy, TRE uses a simple series of exercises to safely evoke the body's natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating—calming the nervous system and restoring a sense of balance and peace.

Your body knows how to let go.

TRE, developed by Dr. David Berceli, is the most direct expression of what Lowen understood about vibration. It is a simple, safe set of exercises designed to reactivate the body’s own natural tremoring response — the very mechanism that Bioenergetic Analysis works to restore, now available as a gentle, accessible practice. A session involves a short sequence of movements that gently fatigue the muscles of the legs and hips — the area where the body stores much of its survival stress. From this slight fatigue, tremors arise on their own. They are not performed or forced. They spread through the body wherever tension needs to move, quietly completing what stress and trauma left unfinished. No words are required. No story needs to be retold. The body simply does what it has always known how to do — and in doing so, begins to soften, open, and breathe again. You remain fully aware and in control throughout. I guide each session closely, helping you stay grounded and feel safe. Afterward, there is time to rest and integrate. Most people leave feeling lighter, calmer, and more themselves. Sessions take place in person. Most people find that 3 to 6 guided sessions give them the confidence to continue practicing on their own — making TRE a lifelong self-care tool. When the body is no longer spending its energy holding tension, something shifts. People often describe a quiet but unmistakable change — not just in how they feel, but in how they move through life. Less chronic stress. Trauma gently released. More aliveness. Physical ease. Deeper rest. And perhaps most simply: feeling more at home in their own body. Your body already knows the way back.

The Benefits of TRE

Discover how releasing physical tension can restore your emotional well-being, regulate your nervous system, and help you return to a natural state of inner balance.

Nervous System Calm

Shaking directly signals your brain to turn off the “fight or flight” response, bringing immediate, deep relaxation.

Reduced Muscle Tension

Safely releases chronic tightness in the pelvic muscles, lower back, and shoulders where stress stores itself.

Improved Sleep Quality

By discharging trapped physical energy and stress, your body can finally drop into deeper, more restorative sleep cycles.

Emotional Resilience

Releasing tension from the body naturally reduces feelings of anxiety, overwhelm, and emotional exhaustion over time.

Questions we often asked

Anyone who senses that something is held in the body; whether they’ve been in therapy for years or are coming to this kind of work for the first time. If you’ve done talk therapy and still feel the tension, the contraction, the emotional distance physically, this works at that next layer. If you’ve never been in therapy but have always felt something unresolved in your body, a chronic bracing, a flatness, an explained pain or tension.

No direct experience required.

The length of therapy varies based on your goals and needs. Some clients benefit from short-term therapy, while others choose ongoing support.

Sessions focus on understanding your concerns, developing coping strategies, and working toward meaningful, personal goals at your own pace.

Therapy is confidential, with limited legal exceptions related to safety, which your clinician will explain during your first session.

Most clients begin with weekly sessions, though frequency can be adjusted based on progress and individual needs.

The Bridge - From Bioenergetics to TRE

At the heart of Bioenergetic Analysis is a concept Alexander Lowen called vibration — the natural, spontaneous aliveness that runs through a healthy body. When we are well, grounded, and free, the body hums with a subtle inner movement: a tremor in the legs when standing, a quiver in the breath, a gentle pulsation that signals the nervous system is at ease.

Lowen saw this vibration as the body’s language of life. A body that vibrates freely is a body that feels — that can experience joy, grief, anger, and love without shutting down. A body that has lost its vibration has usually done so in response to pain: it learned to hold still, to brace, to not feel.

Much of Bioenergetic work involves restoring this natural tremoring quality. Long before therapy existed, the body already knew how to discharge stress — and it still does, if we let it. Watch an animal after a frightening experience. It trembles, shakes, and then settles. That shaking is not weakness. It is the nervous system completing its stress response and returning to balance. Humans have this same capacity. But most of us have been taught to suppress it. We tense up, keep it together, and the energy of stress has nowhere to go. Over time, it becomes chronic tension, anxiety, or a vague sense of being stuck.

This is where TRE begins. Your body knows how to let go.
